Hello my friends!

‘Tis the season, but truth be told I get asked this question all year: “Which crystal should I get my for my friend who’s - - - …”

As a healer it’s always hard to say, because so much depends on the person and what kind(s) of energy they need.

At the same time, I can understand that if you’re new to crystals and wish to make a nice crystal gift to someone, it can be an overwhelming task.

So I thought it would be fun to put this guide together!

At the time I write this, I also like that buying a crystal for someone is not only a kind + healing gift, but you’re also supporting small businesses at the same time (I’m officially boycotting the big box stores - so many small businesses and families need our help surviving this economic crisis #jmho).

A couple of things to bear in mind about this Crystal Gift Guide: this is not an exhaustive list, these are just my top suggestions. And they’re just suggestions, I encourage you to always honor your intuition when buying crystals.

One more thing: I don’t sell crystals.

Now, before we begin….

Some tips on size, shape, type, etc.

Here are some of the more common formations you’ll find, and also some notes on their applied uses and sizes.

Tumbled stones:

These are stones that have been polished in a tumbler mixed with varying textures of grit. Tumbled stones tend to be smaller (generally ranging from .5” - 2” in diameter) and are comfortable to wear in a pocket, pouch (or bra!), and comfortable to hold.

They’re good for wearing for longer periods of time, and mixing together with other stones to form a crystal healing combination.

Tumbled crystals are the most common and cost-efficient crystals to get, and the most multi-purpose in terms of use.

Crystal points:

Crystals can be found naturally formed or mechanically shaped and polished into a point. There are single-termination points, meaning just one end is pointed, or double-terminated, meaning that both ends are pointed.

The crystal’s energy will be directed through the point, which is useful in crystal healing, divination, ritual, manifestation, and metaphysical workings.

People who tend more towards natural crystals, only, will appreciate a natural terminated point.

In general, the bigger the size, the more energy the crystal will direct.

a polished jade sphere

Crystal spheres:

Crystal spheres are most commonly artificially shaped, but can be found in nature as well. They emit energy in all directions, so they’re particularly useful in rooms, on desks or table tops, etc. The larger the sphere, the farther its energy will emit into the space.

Crystal spheres are also comfortable to hold in the hand during meditation, but not very useful in crystal healing layouts.

Palm stones:

Palm stones are crystals that have been polished and shaped into a smooth, oval formation. People find them very soothing to hold or rub, so they’re an excellent choice for people who experience stress or anxiety (#prettymucheverybody).

They’re also very comfortable to wear, sliding easily into pockets without being bulky, and will lie evenly on the body in crystal therapy sessions.

They typically range in size from 1.5” - 3” in diameter.

a natural amethyst cluster

Crystal clusters:

Naturally formed individual or smaller crystals that have all grown or clustered on a mineral or stone matrix. Clusters tend to be beautiful specimens, can range in size from 1” to meters wide, and are usually treasured pieces in a person’s collection.

Because they emit amplified crystal energy (due to the many points beaming energy out in multiple directions), clusters are great for placing in rooms, sacred spaces, on altars, in gardens, etc. They can be held in meditation, and placed on the body or under a therapy table in healing work. They’re not comfortable to wear, but are often used in jewelry as pendants or rings.

Crystal jewelry:

Crystals in jewelry do still emit therapeutic energy, though some kinds are more effective than others. Earrings tend to be too small, but if it’s a high frequency stone like danburite or quartz, it can still have an effect. Rings, pendants, and crystal beaded necklaces and bracelets (including ankle bracelets) tend to be the most popular.

a natural fluorite rock with two holes drilled into it for candles

Candle holders, lamps, etc.:

The general rule of thumb here is that the candle holders or lamps will emit the energy properties of the crystal from which they are made.

It has been found in scientific studies that heating Himalayan salt lamps helps to release negative ions into the atmosphere, helping to purify the air (and also energy, fyi). Crystal lamps have become trendy now, you can find them made from all kinds of crystals, including amethyst, rose quartz, and selenite. For the most part, beyond the crystal’s energy, they are decorative in their purpose.

Needless to say they’re good for use in a room or sacred space. I also think they make nice housewarming or nuptial gifts.

Baby

These crystals can create a soothing atmosphere in a baby’s room, and also increase the loving bond between parent and child. Celestite adds a protective, angelic vibe to the mix. I recommend clusters far out of reach, never a crystal for a child to hold or have in their crib as it’s a definite swallowing hazard.

I also have suggestions for psychic or sensitive children and for a baby room.
